Metis is a fictional retelling of the life of Charles de Langlade who was a military leader and fur trader in the 18th century. Langlade's father was a leading French trader and his mother was a Odawa princess. As such, he was well positioned to bridge European, Canadian, and Native American cultures as they fought to maintain their homelands against British and colonial American aggression. Langlade lived a long and adventurous life which is captured through a series of interviews by P. V. Lawson, a reporter for the newly established New-York Evening Post. Langlade lead French and native forces throughout the French and Indian War including in their famous victory over General Braddock and Colonel Washington at the Monongahela. Langlade fought at most of the major engagements in the war. Although the French and their native allies lost, Langlade was so respected for his skills and connections that he was hired by the British to be their liaison with tribes throughout the Midwest. He later fought with the British against the Americans in the American Revolution. Although he was again on the losing side, the new American government sought to retain his services on a similar basis as the British. A remarkable man who lived during a remarkable period of history for the US, Canada, and the indigenous people who occupied those lands.
