Midnight (2023)
A novel by Amy McCulloch
I loved Breathless, McCulloch's first novel, so pre ordered this one. It is a strong mystery with interesting characters (although perhaps not enough detail on the broad range of supporting ones) and a fascinating location for the action to take place. It does start a little slowly, but this helps to generate a feeling of dread. I liked how the protagonist was cut off from the majority of technology - it made the story more claustrophobic and gripping. So why 4* rather than 5*? I felt that the main character was quite unsympathetic (not necessarily a problem) and that we never really got inside her head until the very end (a bit of a problem). I also felt that the villain was possibly a little bit unbelievable in being able to physically do what they did by themself, although that might be just a misunderstanding on my side. I also noticed a bit of a plot flaw at one point with one of the supporting characters seemingly in two places at once. I think. It's all a bit confusing at one point with boats going back and forth. So, a slight notch down from Breathless, but definitely worth reading for those who like their thrillers in remote locations.
